Dr. Southerland received his undergraduate degree at the University of Victoria, Canada, and his MB, BCH, BAO, LRCP 7 SI (Honors), Royal College of Surgeons, in Ireland.  He did a rotating Internship at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, Ireland, and was Senior Medical Resident of the Year.  He completed a Residency in Internal Medicine (Categorical) at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio, and a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL

Dr. Southerland is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association, American College of Gastroenterology, and the Crohns and Colitis Foundation. ECFMG Certificate

Dr. Southerland was voted Top 10 Physician Role Model of Year-2005 by Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
